Green's Aerification Schedule UPDATE

Originally, we had planned to aerify our greens in early June, but with the USGA Senior Women’s Open Qualifier coming to the club on June 23rd, we’ve made the decision to push that work back just a bit. Our updated aerification dates are now set for Monday, June 30 and Tuesday, July 1.

Why the change? With cooler weather in May—and possibly a mild June ahead—two weeks simply wouldn’t provide enough recovery time to ensure tournament-ready conditions for the qualifier. Aerification is essential, but so is putting our best foot forward for this high-profile event. By shifting the schedule, we’re giving the greens a little more breathing room to shine on the 23rd.

The good news: this delay won’t negatively affect the long-term health of our greens. They’ll have plenty of recovery time before we head into overseed prep in the fall.

We’re also taking advantage of the two-day closure to get a lot of key work done. In addition to aerifying, we’ll:

  • Topdress and brush the greens

  • Fertilize and mow

  • Chemically eradicate any remaining ryegrass growing in the green's edges

  • Reestablish those edges

As a quick aside—this process of maintaining a clean, sharp edge becomes much easier on an overseeded green, when you don’t have dormant Bermuda butting right up against actively growing cool-season rye.

Now, let’s talk about why aerification is so important. It’s not just about poking holes in the turf—this process plays a huge role in:

  • Thatch management

  • Controlling organic matter buildup

  • Improving water infiltration and root health

  • Enhancing surface drainage and disease suppression

Following aerification, we’ll topdress the greens using the exact same sand blend they were originally built with. This ensures compatibility which will prevent layering and drainage issues in the long run.

Speaking of topdressing—this is something we stay will consistent with throughout the growing season. We recently completed our fifth topdressing of the season, and we’ll continue with applications every few weeks as we move through the summer and into the next overseed.

These strategies—when done regularly and with purpose—are what will help us deliver greens that are smooth, true, firm, and healthy. Thanks for reading, and as always, we appreciate your support and understanding as navigate the summer transition.
